The vast and unique city of Petra was carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab Civilization who settled in the region more than 2000 years ago.  The Nabataeans were nomadic Arab people from Arabia who began to arrive and settle into the city.  By the 2nd century BC, Petra had become a bustling city center and was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom.   The remains of the city consist of Royal Tombs, Obelisk, Houses, Streets, Temples, a Theater, a Monastery, and the Treasury.  On its inscription as a World Heritage Site, it was described as ‘one of the most precious cultural properties of man’s heritage.
